Don’t Miss the Little Things!

I’m embarrassed to say that, in recent weeks, I have fallen into the trap of waiting for something spectacular to come before I declare that it passes the “awesomeness” test and worthy of being blogged about. I had to step back and look again at my subtitle – celebrating the little things that make life awesome! I started this blog, partially as a learning experience for me to get more familiar with how the blogging process works, but more importantly, to remind me to look for the good when life gets hard.

Let me take just a minute to tell you what’s making my life hard right now. My husband and I are guardians to my mother-in-law, who has dementia. Coping with her disease and the accompanying communication and behavioral issues is challenging. In many ways, I feel that I have become the mother to a 70-year old child. And I never wanted children! We have good days and bad days, but every day is a struggle. Since we have only recently arrived in the area, we don’t have a support system of family and friends in place to help get us through as we would have before we moved. Since my husband has a wonderful career that he enjoys, we decided that I would be the primary caregiver. Prior to our move, I was blessed with not one, but two jobs that allowed me the flexibility I need to care for her and still be employed. I have not yet found that here, which in turn, makes finances another source of concern. It all gets a bit overwhelming sometimes!

Having said all of that, LIFE IS GOOD! That’s what this blog is really about – finding the joy everyday.

Look, this was the view from my kitchen table when we were having dinner the other night.

And each morning, when I’m making breakfast and getting everyone ready to go out and face the world for the day, this little guy comes to visit.

Backyard Visitor

When I walk out into my backyard, I see the most amazing rose bush. It has some issues and I could concentrate on those, or I can be amazed that it has flowers of different colors on it. How awesome is that?

I know that everyone has things that they are dealing with in their lives. Making the effort to see the gifts that are put in front of me helps me to get through mine. I hope it helps you, too!
